Urgent Action

Protests and Arrests in Tibet

50 years on from the Tibetan National Uprising in 1959, Tibetans continue to resist China's occupation. One year on from last years' Tibet-wide protest, Tibet remains under intense Chinese military crackdown.

During the last few months, despite a heavy military presence in Tibet, Tibetans have been engaged in passive as well as active resistance in Tibet. There have been a number protests in separate locations on the plateau; some solitary, some involving hundreds of people. The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy has reported that there have been more than 28 known protests and 60 arrests in Kardze, eastern Tibet, alone.

In February Tibetans refused to refused to celebrate Tibetan New Year in memory of those who died last year during China's crackdown. Since 10 March, Tibetan farmers in Kardze have staged a farming boycott, by refusing to till their fields, in defiance of the prevailing repressive policies in Tibet. On 2 April, Tibetans staged a sit-in protest in front of the Xining City People's High Court (Qinghai Province) with a banner which read: "appealing to the court to conduct fair judicial proceedings in accordance with the law".

China's state media has been churning out large numbers of propaganda pieces on Tibet while Tibet remains tightly under military lockdown. It is urgent that the Chinese government retract the military crackdown and pay heed to Tibetan grievances.
