In April 1989 hundreds of thousands of students and ordinary Chinese gathered on Tiananmen Square (a.k.a. The Gate of Heavely Peace) to demanding greater freedom and democracy. The protest lasted for seven weeks until 4 June, when the Chinese Communist leaders despatched military and tanks on the protester killing thousands.

Every year the day is commemmorated everywhere in the world, except in China.
