Secretariat

The ITSN Secretariat reports to the Steering Committee, and its role is to implement ITSN policy. Secretariat staff may also recommend policy to the Steering Committee for decision. The Secretariat is also responsible on a day to day basis for managing ITSN’s budgets. As of December 2007 ITSN’S Secretariat consists of the following staff:

Executive Director: Alison Reynolds, based in the UK, alison@tibetnetwork.org
ITSN's Executive Director is responsible for the management, administration, and fundraising activities of the ITSN secretariat within the strategic framework approved by the Steering Committee. She is responsible for the efficient and effective achievement or implementation of policy objectives or decisions approved by them; and must ensure that the Committee can fulfil its functions by ensuring that it receives appropriate and timely information and advice on all relevant matters. The Executive Director manages, motivates and is responsible for the well-being and efficiency of ITSN secretariat staff. She ensures that ITSN operates on a sound legal and financial basis and fulfils its legal accountabilities. The Executive Director is line-managed by the Steering Committee Chair(s). The Executive Director is responsible for the management, administration, and fundraising activities of the ITSN secretariat within the strategic framework approved by the Steering Committee. The Executive Director manages and motivates ITSN staff. She serves as Secretary of ITSN and ensures that ITSN operates on a sound legal and financial basis and fulfils its legal accountabilities. The Executive Director is line-managed by the Steering Committee Chair(s).

Alison Reynolds (based in the UK) became ITSN’s first Executive Director in April 2006. Prior to this Ms Reynolds was Director of Free Tibet Campaign for nine years. She was formerly a campaigner with the environment organization Greenpeace. She holds a degree in Geography from the University of Cambridge, UK.

International Coordinator: Chonpel Tsering, based in the UK, chonpel@tibetnetwork.org.
ITSN's International Coordinator assists the Executive Director in developing and implementing ITSN's strategic priorities. In particular the International Coordinator is responsible for ITSN’s membership programme, for organising Steering Committee meetings and Annual General Meetings and Steering Committee elections. He also supports the work of the CWGs and ensures ITSN’s website is maintained, up to date and fulfilling ITSN’s objectives.

Chonpel Tsering (based in the UK) has worked for ITSN for six years. His knowledge of Tibet and China was developed through his role as Press Monitor/Researcher at the Tibet Information Network. From 2000 – 2004 he held the voluntary position of General Secretary of the Tibetan Community in Britain, which provided invaluable experience in working in a membership based organization, including maintaining regular communications with members and other stakeholders.

Regional Coordinators:
Regional Coordinators respond to the needs of ITSN's members and thereby contribute to building an effective global network of Tibet campaign organisations. They implement ITSN's strategic priorities of campaign co-ordination and capacity building among the member organisations in the region, and build ITSN's membership in the region. Regional Coordinators are responsible for organizing Regional Meetings.

As of March 2007, ITSN has two Regional Coordinators:

Regional Coordinator South Asia: Tsering Choedup, based in India. choedup@tibetnetwork.org
Prior to this appointment as ITSN's South Asia Regional Coordinator, Tsering Choedup worked at Men-Tsee-Khang The Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute, for just over 9 years, with various responsibilities such as Editor of its quarterly newsletter and website, Project Officer, Public Relations Officer and Sponsorship Secretary. He also held the position of Information secretary of the Dharamsala-based regional Tibetan Youth Congress, the largest Tibetan NGO. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism.

Regional Coordinator Latin America: Exa Mendez- Guerrero, based in Mexico. exa@tibetnetwork.org
Exa graduated from Tilburg University in the Netherlands in 2005 with an MSc in Business and Economics. Her thesis was on the effects of the external and internal environment on the strategic effectiveness of International Dutch Universities. While a student she worked for the Office of International affairs of the Faculty of Economics, gathering data on Latin American markets for the promotion of Tilburg’s international academic programs, and promoted these programs in Mexico and Europe.

Olympics Coordinator: Freya Putt, freya@tibetnetwork.org
ITSN has appointed an Olympics Campaign Coordinator for the period May 2007 to September 2008, to maximise the opportunity presented by Beijing's hosting of the 2008 Olympics Games. The Olympics Coordinator is responsible for bringing ITSN's member organisations together to plan effective strategies for this campaign, and for providing materials and other support for the implementation of the campaign.

Freya Putt (based in Canada) graduated in May 2007 from Columbia University with a Masters degree in International Affairs. Freya worked for Students for a Free Tibet for 5 years; firstly as Development Coordinator and latterly as Campaign Coordinator. She planned and implemented many Tibet campaigns, and mobilized and coordinated grassroots participation from the hundreds of Students for a Free Tibet chapters around the world.

The ITSN secretariat may also employ the use of consultants or temporary staff eg in Fundraising or on specific Campaign Working Group projects, as required and as funds allow.
