December 20 | China pays Nepalese police to arrest Tibetan refugees as they cross over the border to escape persecution, according to US embassy cables released by WikiLeaks. One cable, sent by an unnamed officer at the New Delhi embassy in February, quoted a source saying that China "rewards (Nepali forces) by providing financial incentives to officers who hand over Tibetans attempting to exit China."

December 18 | More than 85,000 Tibetans have arrived in India in the past 30 years and 46,000 of them returned to Tibet, says a US cable put out by WikiLeaks. The New Delhi American embassy cable of Feb 22 this year and reproduced by The Guardian said that "an average of 2,500-3,500 refugees from Tibet typically arrive in Dharamsala each year".

December 16 | The Dalai Lama told US diplomats last year that the international community should focus on climate change rather than politics in Tibet because environmental problems were more urgent, secret American cables reveal.

The exiled Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader told Timothy Roemer, the US ambassador to India, that the "political agenda should be sidelined for five to 10 years and the international community should shift its focus to climate change on the Tibetan plateau" during a meeting in Delhi last August.
